plumbing /industry news WATERFURNACE RENEWABLE ENERGY ACQUIRES CHILLIT CHILLERS WaterFurnace Renewable Energy acquired the assets and technology of Chillit Chillers, a manufacturer of specialty chillers and geothermal heat pumps for large commercial and industrial applications. WaterFurnace plans to continue Chillit's operations from its facility in Goshen, Indiana, while it determines the best way to maximize operating efficiencies going forward. VOTE WILL REDUCE HOT WATER WASTE Plumbing industry stakeholders recently voted to make a change to plumbing codes that will ensure hot water pipes in new homes and commercial buildings are insulated. The change stipulates that hot water pipes be insulated for all homes and commercial buildings built after 2015. Overall, insulation of hot water pipes will shorten the amount of time spent waiting for hot water at showers and faucets, and cut hot water waste by 15 to 30 percent. FEDERAL REDUCTION OF LEAD IN DRINKING WATER ACT PROMPTS NEW EDUCATIONAL PIPING VIDEO The Copper Development Association has launched the latest video in its "Do it Proper With Copper" series: Soldering of No-Lead Copper Alloy Fittings, Valves and Components. The educational video serves as a resource for those installing or working with new copper alloys. The video demonstrates how to properly solder copper tube and fittings to the newer, no-lead, brass and bronze copper alloys. For details, visit www.copper.org. UPONOR DOMESTIC WATER PIPING AND HYDRONIC PIPING SPECIFICATIONS NOW ON ARCAT Uponor's Domestic Water Piping and Hydronic Piping specifications are now available in both MasterFormat 1995 and 2014 formats on the ARCAT site. The site also includes a profile for each product family that allows engineers to research products, and then offers a link to Uponor's Online Product Catalog to access CAD and BIM files. TEAM USA WINS WATER INNOVATION CHALLENGE Team USA emerged victorious over competitor Team Australia in the inaugural Water Innovation Challenge held June 3-5 during International Water Week in Singapore. During three days of intense competition, the teams developed innovative solu- tions for emerging water and sanitation problems in Nepal and Bangladesh in a series of hands-on design challenges. Team USA was comprised of students and professionals under the age of 26 and was led by William N. Erickson, an ASPE member and a vice president of ASPE's Research Foundation. PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR MEETING NEW DOE WATER HEATER REGULATIONS On April 16, 2015, new Department of Energy stan- dards for residential — and a few commercial — water heaters go into effect. Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association and its corporate partner Bradford White recently conducted a webinar, avail- able at www.phccweb.org, explaining how the chang- es will affect the industry. Considerations include storage (warehousing), transportation of products, installation, on-going maintenance and costs. STANDARDS DEVELOPED FOR CONSUMER WATER CONTACT PRODUCTS The Water Quality Association and the American Society of Plumbing Engineers have partnered to develop a suite of ANSI-approved standards on consumer water contact products. The first two of those standards — WQA/ASPE S-803: Sustainable Drinking Water Treatment Systems and WQA/ASPE S-802: Activated Carbon Media for Drinking Water Treatment Systems — are available for public review at http://aspe.org/PublicReview. Aquatherm hires national estimating manager David Rosenstein recently joined Aquatherm as national estimating manager. He brings a vast amount of experi- ence working on water works, wastewater treatment, hydroelectric power and commercial, residential, institutional and medical projects, among others. Rosenstein will launch and imple- ment a program to help mechanical and plumbing professionals estimate initial Aquatherm installation costs and will train the company's representatives and wholesalers to better understand how to use the com- pany's new estimation tools.
