Summer 2014 | Volume 2, Issue 2 8040 E. Morgan Trail, Ste. 23 Scottsdale, AZ 85258 p: (480) 361-6300 f: (480) 361-6394 M uch has been going on in the world of water lately and with good reason — it's imperative to conserve our supply of water — a resource that is depleting. To conserve water, many measures can be taken and commonly are practiced, such as taking shorter showers and not having the water run while brushing teeth. These measures are obvious, but according to the Environmental Protection Agency, water-use efficiency practices generally fall into two categories: > Engineering practices: practices based on modifications in plumbing, fixtures or water supply operating procedures > Behavioral practices: practices based on changing water-use habits While there have been several developments on the product side to conserve water and we've seen more and more efficient products hit the market, additional support is needed. With this in mind, Plumbing Manufacturers International recently joined 11 other members of the Plumbing Industry Leadership Coalition to create a letter to the Senate urging its co-sponsorship of The WaterSense Efficiency, Conservation, and Adaptation Act of 2014 (S. 2226). This measure, supported by PMI and introduced by Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), seeks to improve U.S. water use efficiency and promote smart water systems to help communities across the nation make significant progress in conserving water and reducing costs. I recently caught up with Barbara Higgens, CEO and executive director of Plumbing Manufacturers International, who explained that the bill promotes authorization of the Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense program. In other words, getting it "fully funded and recognized as an official program like Energy Star." Ultimately, the measure would help manufacturers promote and encourage more widespread use of their WaterSense products. According to the letter, data indicates only 5 percent of the market has transitioned to these water-efficient products, so far. The coalition letter closes by stating, "Water efficient plumbing products not only conserve water, energy and money, but also reduce the strain on our aging infrastruc- ture. We urge you to join Senator Tom Udall in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation." The full letter is available at www.pmihome.org. In every issue of HVAC/P, we strive to give ample coverage of what's happening in the industry, not only on the product side, but also in industry news, codes and standards. If there is anything you would like to see more or less of, please do not hesitate to drop us a line at info@HVACPproducts.com. We want to hear from you. In the meantime, enjoy the issue!
