Special Issue 2018 | Volume 6, Issue 2 Technology transforming HVAC, plumbing industries M ore than 150 industry, water utility and government participants recently attended the sixth-biennial Emerging Water Technology Symposium in California. The event provides a platform for plumbers, contractors, engineers, manufacturers and water-efficiency experts to intro- duce new technologies for the plumbing and mechanical industries. At the symposium's conclusion, a group of sixth- and seventh-grade students from a nearby middle school reported on a device they developed called the Pressure Potty Water Saving Sensor. The device was developed as a potential solution to the problem of unwanted flushing by automatic toilets, resulting in water being wasted. The students have a provisional patent pending on the device. Technology is — and has been — developing at a rapid pace. And as illustrated above, even younger generations are thinking about the future and how technology plays an important role. Remember when the internet of things seemed a remote concept? It is now very commonplace in the industry. IoT has revolutionized the industry with com- pletely connected homes and buildings. We are realizing the potential of gather- ing data to predict and notify us of problems such as poor IAQ, leak detections and much more. Examples of these types of products that have recently become available include: > Smart, connected water monitoring systems that protect families and their homes from leak damage > HVAC monitoring systems that contain sensors to detect HVAC health and environmental conditions, along with onboard algorithms to transform the data into information > A commercial boiler with built-in smart monitoring technology, along with an all-inclusive leak detection and prevention system Technology is certainly more than a buzzword. It is for all these reasons that we have dedicated a good portion of this special issue to technology. Within these pages, you will find a collection of the most recent high-tech HVAC and plumbing products on the market, in our tech roundup section. I suspect the focus of preventive maintenance is one area that will see leaps and bounds when it comes to advancements in technology. We will always strive to bring you the latest news and developments. Don't forget to check out our website in between issues and feel free to sign up for our quarterly eNews. Enjoy the issue!
