P urchased by the Ball brothers in 1918 and donated to the state of Indiana, Ball State University began as a teachers' college. The success of the college gained wide appeal and other majors sought to study at the fine institution. With rapidly growing enrollment and funding, the university's expansion has yet to slow down. Now, in 2017, there are approximate- ly 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students with 190 majors to choose from. The campus features state-of- the-art facilities and strives to provide immersive learning opportunities. In the spring of 2015, Ball State University had an opportunity to renovate the Schmidt/Wilson Residence Hall. This complex was established in 1969 and named after two highly involved professors. The dorm facility, which reopens in fall 2017, is an eight-story building that houses approximately 450 living- learning theater and art students and features a computer lab, fitness room, lounge area and laundry rooms. The university is environmentally conscious and places great care on the needs of students. As such, the university staff noticed that other new or renovated residence halls were experiencing noise issues with the loudness of the water pressure. Unhappy with the valves used on previous dorm projects, Ball State University, along with the project partners, turned to Nexus Valve for a solution. HANDS-ON LEARNING Keeping in line with Ball State's immersive learning, Nexus Valve brought all parties to its facility in Fishers, Indiana to see and test the recommended products: NexLok and Dynamic valves. Dale Lyons, eastern regional sales manager for Nexus Valve, suggested a pressure independent control valve as a solution because it's a valve that, combined with a thermal motoric actuator, keeps constant pressure, which significantly reduces noise level. The Dynamic PICV has an adjustable f low setter, integrated measuring venturi and a differential pressure regulator. It comes standard with two pressure and temperature test plugs, a universal mounting collar and is available in 1/2-inch to 2-inch sizes. Not only did the Dynamic PICV solve the noise problem, when it was combined with the added benefit of new technology — the tool-less industrial strength NexLok push- fit connection system — it allowed for a fast, clean installation that avoided damage in tight spaces. The superintendent for mechanical contractor Greiner Brothers, Chuck Davis, said by using the NexLok fittings, it was about an 80 percent faster install. Steve Huffine, co-owner of Faco, said the installation made for a clean project that saved a huge headache by solving a tight space and noise problem.
