CERTIFICATION A certification mark signifies a product has been tested to and found to comply with national standards by a qualified, independent testing laboratory. It also means the product is listed in the cer- tification laboratory's public directory. Additionally, all certified products are required to have a continual follow-up program to ensure all manufactured products remain in compliance. Among the North American cer- tification marks commonly found on plumbing products are the Warnock Hersey and ETL Listed Mark pro- vided by Intertek, the UL Listed Mark provided by Underwriters Labora- tory, the CSA Listed Mark provided by CSA International and the UPC Mark provided by IAPMO. While Intertek has been testing plumbing products for decades and certifying them with the Warnock Hersey Mark, they recently introduced the ETL Listed Mark for plumbing products making for easier mark recognition by the industry and regulating officials. Within North America, product certification marks follow a convention that identifies the country to which it applies. A product bearing a mark with the "US" identifier in the four o'clock position has been tested and deemed compliant to U.S. standards. A mark with a "C" identifier in the eight o'clock position means the product complies with Canadian standards. A mark with both identifiers, or no identifiers, signi- fies that the product complies with both U.S. and Canadian standards. The testing and certification system also provides documentation of the attention paid to safety, which protects manufacturers and retailers from liabil- ity. Although market research suggests certification marks are rarely included in the buying criteria of consumers, the opposite can be said for architects, city code officials and plumbing inspectors. Given that jurisdictional authorities have expectations and requirements that vary from city to city and from re- gion to region, a nationally recognized certification mark benefits manufac- turers throughout North America.
