The designation for 207 is ANSI/AMCA Standard 207-17. ANSI/AMCA Standard 207-17 provides a method to estimate the input power and overall efficiency of an extended fan system. An extended fan system is composed of a fan and an electric motor but may also include a transmission and a motor controller. While direct measurement of fan system performance is preferred, the large number of fan system configurations often makes testing impractical. This standard offers a standardized method to estimate fan system performance by modeling commonly used components. Calculations reported in accordance with this standard offers fan users a tool to compare alternative fan system configurations in a consistent and uniform manner. This document does not provide selection guidance. Users must ensure that selected components have sufficient capacity and are configured to produce the desired results. Learn more at amca.org. Updated SMACNA Thermoset FRP Duct Construction Manual Available The second edition of The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association's "Thermoset FRP Duct Construction Manual" is now available. The 228-page book is a resource to rely upon for the proper selection, manufacture and installation of FRP duct systems. This American National Standard (ANSI/ SMACNA 011-2017) contains language, tables and details for the construction of hand lay-up, spray-up and filament wound FRP ductwork from 30-inch wg negative pressure to 30-inch wg positive pressure. Round ductwork sizes are expanded to include up to 96 inches diameter. For rectangular ductwork, new duct stiffener tables are added for easier selection. This expanded edition includes commercial/ HVAC applications supported by an underground installation section, as well as added language on testing and balancing, duct sealing and duct leakage. Symposium Explores Transformational Building Delivery Practices, Strategies Danfoss recently hosted its 29th EnVisioneering Symposium, "Building Delivery: The Nexus of Market Transformation," in Washington, D.C. The event convened leaders from the HVACR and buildings industries, policy, research and education and energy-efficiency advocacy groups to discuss how high-performance buildings can be delivered at the pace, precision and volume required to transform the buildings marketplace. Danfoss also produced a report based on the topic of this year's symposium titled, "Building Delivery at the Forefront of Market Transformation," which explores practices and strategies within the building delivery equation. NEW ONLINE RESOURCE FROM MECHANICAL SERVICE CONTRACTORS OF AMERICA The Online Piping and Usage Specification tool helps users evaluate combinations of pipe types, materials, applications and joining methods. Plus, the data in OPUS links directly to the members of Mechanical Service Contractors of America's Manufacturer/Supplier Council who can provide the materials and methods to make it all work. While OPUS is geared toward those new to the industry, it can used by experienced professionals who need to make dynamic combinations of systems and materials on the fly. The free resource includes information on the most prevalent materials used in the mechanical contracting industry, the most typical applications or uses, simple definitions, photos, diagrams and more. LOW-GWP ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS TESTING RESULTS ISSUED The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology Institute, the research arm of the Air- Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, recently released the first research report as part of its ongoing testing of flammable refrigerants, many of which were identified as possible replacements to high global warming-potential hydrofluorocarbons that will be phased down under the Montreal Protocol. The research and testing program is part of a $5.2 million commitment on the part of AHRI, ASHRAE, U.S. Department of Energy and the California Air Resources Board to further test in real- world settings low-GWP, but mildly flammable or flammable refrigerants. The report, "Benchmarking Risk by Whole Room Scale Leaks and Ignitions Testing of A2L Refrigerants," was developed following testing at UL, which began in June 2016. The objective was to conduct refrigerant leak and ignition testing under real-world conditions to develop data and insight into the risk associated with the use of A2L refrigerants, which are mildly flammable, but have a low-GWP. Room scale tests were performed for a variety of commercial and residential scenarios. Visit ahrinet.org to learn more. ASHRAE RELEASES NEW EDITION OF PRINCIPLES OF HVAC TEXTBOOK ASHRAE has released an updated eighth edition of Principles of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning. The textbook is ASHRAE's recommended text for HVAC instruction and presents the fundamental concepts for HVAC systems and design. The eighth edition has been updated to reflect the changes made in the new 2017 ASHRAE Handbook – Fundamentals, and contains the most current ASHRAE procedures, as well as information on the treatment of building HVAC systems — from basic principles through design and operation. The textbook is divided into three major sections, including general concepts, air conditioning systems and HVAC&R; equipment.
