Summer 2017 | Volume 5, Issue 2 8040 E. Morgan Trail, Ste. 23 Scottsdale, AZ 85258 p: (480) 361-6300 f: (480) 361-6394 I t's been 10 years since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched the WaterSense program and, over the course of that decade, Americans have saved $32.6 billion in water and energy bills and 1.5 trillion gallons of water. That's more than the amount of water needed to supply all of the homes in California for a year. What a great way to celebrate an anniversary! In addition to saving water, WaterSense-labeled products save the energy associated with treating, pumping and heating water. According to the EPA, since 2006, Water- Sense-labeled products saved the energy equal to the amount used to power 19.4 million homes for a year while preventing 78 million metric tons of associated greenhouse gas emissions. Energy and water conservation is an ongoing effort surrounded by regulations, standards, etc. All of which helps to have guidance as a starting point. For example, a few months ago the EPA finalized its first Energy Star speci- fication for commercial packaged boilers. These products incorporate a burner and hot water storage to provide hydronic space heating and, in some cases, hot water in smaller commercial buildings. If all eligible commercial packaged boil- ers sold in the United States were Energy Star certified, the energy cost savings would grow to more than $1 billion and 23 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented, equivalent to the emissions of over 2 million vehicles. Learn more at energystar.gov. In addition, The National Institute of Standards and Technology released a study proving that unitary HVACR systems function at 60-70 percent of their lab-tested efficiency if not installed properly, and the EPA estimates that most homes suffer from improper installation practices. In response, The Indoor En- vironment & Energy Efficiency Association, or ACCA, has created HVACR in- stallation and maintenance standards and programs designed to ensure indoor comfort systems will operate efficiently and safely. View details at acca.org. Each year, millions of homeowners and business owners embark on energy- saving projects. Some are simple tasks, while others are more complex. Wheth- er it's swapping out light bulbs to investing in more energy-efficient HVAC equipment or water-saving plumbing fixtures — or both— the result is not only cheaper electric and water bills. We are also conserving our resources. This issue includes a section on conservation: energy-saving, water-saving and time-saving products. We also highlight new HVAC and plumbing products used in the hospitality industry. Enjoy the issue!
